The IOA offers a one day program on Saturday, April 26, 2025, with six hours of continuing education for paraoptometrics, opticians and staff. Track One – Leadership
8:30 – 9:30 am – Feedback That Works: Why It’s So Hard to Give and Receive, and How to Do It Right (Walker)
Giving and receiving feedback is a crucial skill in any professional setting, yet it is often mishandled or avoided altogether. This session explores the psychological and emotional barriers to effective feedback, strategies for delivering constructive criticism, and methods to foster a culture of continuous improvement.
9:30 – 10:30 am – Introverts in the Workplace: Unlocking the Hidden Strengths of Quiet Leaders (Walker)
Introverts are often overlooked in traditional leadership discussions, yet their unique strengths—deep thinking, active listening, and strategic decision-making—can make them exceptional leaders. This session debunks myths about introversion and provides strategies to help quiet professionals thrive in the workplace.
10:30 – 11:30 am – Practical Steps for Effective Communication (Walker)
Effective communication is more than just speaking clearly—it’s about ensuring your message is understood and acted upon. This session covers key principles of workplace communication, including clarity, emotional intelligence, and adaptability.
1:30 – 2:30 pm – Common Eye Disease (Lawrence)
This course is designed to introduce paraoptometrics to common eye diseases and their impact on the eye. The course covers basic terms and what symptoms accompany the disease.
2:30 – 4:30 – Need vs. Want (Lawrence)
This course is designed to foster dialog between the speaker and audience on the topic of office needs vs. office wants. It will offer a perspective between the optometrist and the staff. This course will cover topics from workplace expectations to the impact of changes within our society in the ophthalmic industry.
Track Two – Technical
8:30 – 10:30 am – Anatomy and Physiology (Lawrence)
This course is designed to teach an understanding of the eye and how it works. The course is designed to identify how the eye works from the source to the brain, the three layers of the eye, and the three chambers in the eye. This includes all the structures, muscles and their cranial nerves innervations, a tear film breakdown, and the visual pathway to the brain.
10:30 – 11:30 am – Basic Optics and Refraction (Lawrence)
This course covers basic principles in ophthalmic lenses and characteristics in myopic, hyperopic, astigmatic lenses, as well as basics in prisms and the refractive qualities lens characteristics associated with the different refractive conditions that these lenses are used for. The discussion will include conditions and terminology used in ocular optics.
1:30 – 2:30 pm – The Power of Active Listening (Walker)
Active listening is a critical yet underrated leadership skill that fosters trust, reduces misunderstandings, and improves team collaboration. This session teaches participants how to listen with intention and respond in a way that encourages open dialogue.
2:30 – 3:30 pm – The Art of Motivation (Walker)
Motivating employees goes beyond salary and perks—it requires understanding human psychology and workplace dynamics. This session explores how leaders can inspire and engage their teams for sustained productivity and satisfaction.
3:30 – 4:30 pm – Practical Steps for Effective Communication (Walker)

Requests postmarked or emailed between April 5 and April 24, 2025, will receive a 75% refund. No refunds will be made after April 24, 2025.
