Event Description
The IOA's 2023 Summer Seminar will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at the Ritz Charles, 12156 N. Meridian Street, Carmel, Indiana. This optometric continuing education event offers eight hours of in-person IOB and Legend Drug CE credit.

Bonus Hour - New Therapies in Dry and Wet AMD

Thomas Ciulla, MD, Indianapolis
This course reviews numerous maculopathies that can masquerade as dry AMD. Emerging therapies for these and for geographic atrophy are presented. Additionally, new therapies for neovascular (wet) AMD and diabetic macular edema such as  VEGF-A inhibition, Pan-VEGF inhibition, TIE2 activation and integrin inhibition agents are discussed.  (1 hour IOB and Legend Drug)

9 – 11 am
Best Cases in Rural Optometry: Thank God I'm a Country Girl

This course discusses over 20 cases that are seen in optometric practice, the challenges each can present, diagnosis and treatment options, and a common sense approach to taking care of patients.  (2 hours IOB and Legend Drug)

Amniotic Membranes: Corneal Cases for Everyday Practice

This course discusses types of amniotic membranes, properties of amniotic tissue, application of membranes, and the potential uses in optometric practices. It includes cases, coding and billing. (1 hour IOB and Legend Drug)

Pain Management in Optometric Practice in the Era of an Opioid Epidemic

Blair Lonsberry, OD, Portland, OR
Ocular pain is an important reason why patients seek care, especially on an emergent basis. The following interactive presentation will use a case-based approach to explore the most effective means to manage pain in optometric practice including the importance of  understanding addiction and the current opioid abuse epidemic. Topical and oral pain management will be discussed with particular  emphasis on the appropriate steps in prescribing oral pain medications.  (2 hours IOB and Legend Drug)
This two hour course meets the April 1, 2024, Indiana renewal requirement that all optometrists who hold or apply for a controlled substances registration after July 1, 2019, must have completed two hours of continuing education during the previous two years addressing the topic of opioid prescribing and opioid abuse. All optometrists may take the course to meet the requirements for Legend Drug Certificate and license renewal.

Oral Pharmaceuticals in an Optometric Practice

When it comes to the treatment of ocular conditions, optometrists do not tend to hesitate when prescribing topical medications but often hesitate in prescribing oral medications. This interactive course examines the use of oral pharmaceuticals in the treatment/management of a variety of anterior segment diseases that present in optometric practice.  (1 hour IOB and Legend Drug)

SLT in Your Practice 2023

Larry Koval, OD, Indianapolis, IN
The glaucoma community has now embraced SLT as the best first line treatment of primary open angle glaucoma. Dr. Koval will discuss his experience with 100+ SLT procedures. Best candidates, doctor-patient discussion of eye drops medication versus SLT, standard SLT versus lower energy settings, safety, and time management will be presented.  (1 hour IOB and Legend Drug)
